"Bernie" A nice surprise from Richard Linklater and Jack Black – the same team that brought you the 2003 comedy “The School of Rock”. Now they’ve reunited for a different kind of comedy – a dark one. Black acts differently in this film – more restrained, focused and at times more intense than in any other film he’s done before. His humor here is understated, not a physical feat that he achieves with his captivating performance. Here’s a guy everyone loves – who everyone should love, and who can never say no. It’s both an interesting and challenging role for him, but he pulls it off brilliantly – perhaps paving the way for more challenging and dramatic roles in the future. Compared to other comedic actors who have attempted more serious turns, he’s not quite as fantastic as, say, Jim Carrey in “The Truman Show” or Adam Sandler in “Punch-Drunk Love” – but he’s on the right track. Shirley MacLaine is also very different here – she has a sweet, slightly sassy personality in many of her previous films, but this film has a cold, condescending aura about her, and her steely eyes sell it. Matthew McConaughey as the ruthless district attorney has certainly improved his acting chops – just look at the courtroom scenes. I really appreciate the small-town setting of the film. The film is done in ‘interviews’ with the friendly small-town folk, giving the film a quirky and homey feel, while Linklater seamlessly weaves in narrative flashbacks – leading up to the cut. The film moves at a strong clip and never feels rushed or dragged. The above-average script has the right amount of screen time balanced to establish the story and characters, notably Bernie. Just when you think the film is about to end – there’s always another interesting thing that happens to keep the audience engaged. Black and Linklater make a good, promising actor-director team. Perhaps Linklater will be the key to unlocking Black’s potential as an actor. Of course, this is another ‘small’ movie – low budget and barely any promotion… so hopefully word of mouth will spread about how good this dark comedy is. P.S. I didn’t know the movie was based on a true story. That made the movie even darker and weirder than it needed to be. Overall rating: 77%
